Nudeskin by Nudestix boasts a minimal but mighty product lineup. The brand’s co-founder, Taylor Frankel tells us more about it.
“I started Nudestix about seven years ago now, alongside my mom and sister,” says Taylor over video call organised by Sephora Malaysia. “My mother, Jenny, is a chemical engineer and she’s been developing cosmetics for over 20 years. She started her career with M.A.C Cosmetics, creating some of their most beautiful products, and then in 2000, she developed another beauty brand called COVER FX, which she formulated in the basement when my sister and I were both still in diapers.”
“In the year 2012, she decided to take a break from the beauty industry to connect with her two teenage daughters. And without any intention of starting another beauty brand, she got inspired by the way my sister and I view beauty. She comes from the ‘more is more’ generation where it was always about artistry and coverage, and taking an hour to do hair and makeup. And then there was my sister and I, who didn’t want to spend hours doing makeup in the morning – who has time for that?” she says.
What they realised very quickly was that the modern woman today, no matter where she is in the world and no matter her age, she wants beauty to be easy, fast, effortless and most importantly, on the go. And that’s the whole basis of Nudestix that we all know and love today.
Say hello to Nudeskin
“My mom, sister and I – we’ve always loved skin. And one of our philosophies when it came to Nudestix was minimalism and multi-tasking, but also creating beauty products that were good for your skin and did not have harsh ingredients that irritate. So it was really important to us that the first thing you did, before you went in with your makeup, was to prep your skin with good products that cleansed, exfoliated, toned and hydrated. So we developed an entirely new line called Nudeskin by Nudestix.”
“This was truly a labour of love. It took us about two years to develop it. We worked alongside a renowned cosmetic dermatologist, Dr. Jason Emer, who’s based in Beverly Hills, California. What we were able to do together was develop a line of simple, multi-tasking, vegan-powered skincare for confident, nude face beauty. This is a line of minimal effort and maximum impact skincare products that really help you simplify your routine, is super efficacious and powered with citrus botanicals and active ingredients to really cleanse the skin, detox your pores and hydrate, soothe and brighten,” explains Taylor.
Step 1: Cleanse
Citrus Clean Balm and Makeup Melt
“The most important thing when it comes to skincare is to make sure that you’re constantly renewing the skin. If you don’t cleanse properly, nothing else will work. We wanted to create a simplified cleansing routine where the products were multi-tasking and we’ve created two products.
“This is your four-in-one. It’s your makeup melt, skin cleanser, skin softener and your skin brightener. It’s got beautiful ingredients like rosehip, apple and orange that are going to refresh the skin, detox pores and help brighten the skin. Use it on completely dry skin. It has a beautiful aromatherapy feeling as well. Massage a drop on your skin and once it has completely melted away, you can take a damp cloth, tissue or water and remove all of that makeup off.”
Gentle Hydragel Face Cleanser
“This is a non-foaming, non-surfactant cleanser. What it does is gently remove makeup, but more importantly, it’s going to cleanse and brighten. Some of the key ingredients in this product are hyaluronic acid to boost moisture and hydration in the skin; bergamot fruit oil that acts as an antiseptic to really deep-cleanse and detox those pores. Mushroom extract is going to help with the brightening of the skin. I wanted to create a micellar gel-type cleanser. It’s completely clear and very cooling on the skin. If you have acne-prone or sensitive skin, we recommend using this because it’s non-irritating and very gentle. You can even keep it in the fridge and then use it the next morning all over the face as a mask.”
Step 2: Exfoliate
Lemon-Aid Detox & Glow Micro Peel
“One of the things my mum, sister and I cannot do without is exfoliating the skin. It’s an essential part of your skincare routine becasue it’s all about skin renewal and cell turnover. We accumulate dead skin cells every single day from excess oil, makeup, debris, pollution and what that can do is cause dullness and pigmentation, acne and blemishes to the skin. Especially when we’re wearing masks everyday that causes moisture to accumulate around the mouth.”
“This is a non-physical exfoliant. It’s a chemical peel that has natural citrus botanicals that’s going to detox your pores, remove dead skin cells, clarify and brighten the skin.”
“Use this on completely dry skin. All you need is about a dime size (10-sen size) and then lightly massage it all over the face. You’re going to notice a peeling action that’s lifting dead skin cells, excess oils and debris. If they’re discoloured, that’s the dead skin that’s coming off, which is the most satisfying thing ever. It’s great for all skin types and can even be used on the lips.”
Step 3: Tone
5% Citrus Fruit & Glycolic Glow Toner
“I get really excited about this product – like I can almost cry because it has made such a big difference to my skin and everyone who’s tried it is obsessed. This is a spa-resurfacing treatment. It is highly active – you have 3% glycolic and 2% natural fruit acids. My favorite part about this toner is that it’s water-based. So there’s no alcohol in this product. If you have super sensitive skin, dermatitis, eczema or acne-prone skin, this is not going to irritate it. Use can to use this three times a week.
Step 4: Moisturise
Citrus C-Mask and Daily Moisturiser
“This is your three-in-one – a moisturiser, makeup primer and sleeping mask. This is going to deeply hydrate the skin. It has a special elastomer that hydrates the skin, instantly absorbs and yet, never feels oily or waxy. We developed this with yuzu, a Japanese citrus fruit that’s highly concentrated with Vitamin C to brighten and reduce the signs of ageing as well. It also has turmeric extract that has anti-inflammatory properties to reduce redness, blemishes and protect skin from UV damage as well. It’s so soothing and hydrating; you can use a light layer as a daily moisturiser and you can also slap it on at night as an evening mask. It also works as a beautiful makeup primer because it doesn’t feel heavy on the skin as well.”
