In conjunction with the launch of Fenty Skin in Malaysia we share some nuggets of skincare wisdom by Sean Garette.

Yup, you read that right – Fenty Skin is finally launching in Sephora Malaysia this December 26. Yay, more great news before we end this crazy ride called 2020! The brand first dropped online earlier in July 2020 on its official website, and just like everything Rihanna has done for the beauty industry, it blew up with both rave and less-than-favourable reviews. Recently, we sat in on a virtual event feautring New York-based aesthetician and now Global Ambassador of Fenty Skin, Sean Garette who has been working in beauty and skincare for about 17 years. He shares his career journey, personal mantra, what’s to love about Fenty Skin and clears up any doubts you may have about the brand.

On becoming the brand’s global ambassador

“It’s kind of a crazy journey for me. I’ve been on social media, kinda sharing my skincare knowledge and really educating my following on ingredients, products, things that happen with acne and hyperpigmentation. And I feel like I’ve gained a nice following through that. Through my social media, I was approached by Fenty Skin, and they pretty much said that we have this amazing line and we want you to be a part of it. I’ve been testing the products since April, and then I was hired as the Global Skin Ambassador for the brand. My purpose at Fenty Skin is to educate and really help the consumers understand the ingredients that we use, why our products are so amazing, and how they can fit to your skincare regimen.”

On his personal skincare mantra

“My skincare mantra is definitely to keep it simple and concise. Especially here in the States, there are so many different skincare brands. But I think so many skincare enthusiasts are very educated about ingredients, exfoliants and things like that, so we kind of over-sensitise our skin with so many products and actives. What aligned for me with Fenty skin was that it was three steps, but what you were really getting are more benefits than that, delivering you the most glowy, hydrated and beautiful skin that you can imagine.”

On going green with Fenty Skin

“There are three products that will fit effortlessly into your life and into your skincare regimen. In terms of the packaging, everything is recyclable and refillable. None of our products come with outer packaging except for our sunscreen; when you get our Hydra Vizor which is our SPF 30, it comes in a little box. Everything else comes as its own product. When you’re done with the Hydra Vizor, you can just recycle the inner bottle and get a refill so you’re not throwing away so much packaging. We really tried to be as sustainable and earth-conscious as possible with the formula and outer packaging.”

On the controversial choice to add fragrance

“Fragrance is a personal thing with your skincare. Specifically for Fenty Skin, fragrance was an important part of the experience that Rihanna wanted to provide for her consumers. She really wanted to create a sensorial experience. One of the things that she used to dread about her skincare was that it felt like a chore. And with adding our tropical and Barbados-inspired scents in the products, it really created a moment for Rihanna in her skincare. It’s something she looked forward to and really enjoyed doing. So that’s what she really wanted to offer. When it comes to skincare, there are so many people who have different allergies or sensitivities. But if you don’t have a known allergy or sensitivity to fragrance, then you really shouldn’t have a problem. We use less than 1% of fragrance in our products and it’s really part of what makes our brand so unique; it really is Rihanna’s view on how she wanted her skincare to stand out on the market.”

On the star ingredient – the Barbados Cherry

“The Barbados cherry is a very antioxidant-rich fruit that’s native to Barbados, which is Rihanna’s home country. She’s obsessed with Barbados cherry juice. Back in Barbados they drink that if you’re having a cold or if you’re feeling sickly; just a daily antioxidant kinda drink. So she wanted to take that healing and reparative properties of the juice and really offer a touch of her hometown in her products. And because it’s about a hundred times more potent with Vitamin C than oranges, it really adds to the brightening and hydrating benefits of the Fenty Skin line.”

Meet The Fenty Start’rs

Fenty Skin in Malaysia
Total Cleans’r Remove-It-All Cleanser, RM120

“The Fenty Start’rs are the three products we launched at the beginning of Fenty Skin. This starts with the Total Cleans’r Remove-It-All Cleanser. This has Barbados cherry, ginkgo biloba, green tea, fig and quince and it’s packed with antioxidants. It’s a gel-to-cream texture and what I love is that this literally removes all traces of makeup, deeply cleanses the skin, and helps balance the sebum production so you’re not super oily. It removes that top excess oil, but it doesn’t strip your skin at all, which is so important in a cleanser.”

Fenty Skin in Malaysia
Fat Water Pore-Refining Toner Serum, RM130

“After you do your cleanse and makeup removal process, you’ll go into your tone and treatment product and that is the Fat Water Pore-Refining Toner Serum. This has been a fan favourite since we’ve launched. This has niacinamide, Barbados cherry, green tea, fig and Japanese raisin tree along with Australian lemon myrtle and witch hazel that really balances out the oil in the skin. It instantly hydrates but doesn’t make you extra oily.”

Fenty Skin in Malaysia
Hydra Visor Invisible Moisturizer Broad Spectrum SPF 30, RM165 (refill RM140)

“Then the last step in the Fenty Starter routine is when you add your Hydra Visor Invisible Moisturizer Broad Spectrum SPF 30 sunscreen. This is your moisturiser and sun protection in one product. It leaves your skin super glowy. It has the Kalahari melon extract, which is hydrating and replenishing on the skin. It has niacinamide and delivers extra hydration from hyaluronic acid and aloe vera, and overall is really great antioxidant moisturiser.”

Fenty Skin in Malaysia
Instant Reset Overnight Recovery Gel Cream, RM185 (refill RM165)

“And then at night when you have removed all your makeup and treat with the Fat Water, replace your Hydra Vizor with the Instant Reset Overnight Recovery Gel Cream. This one has the Kalahari seed oil along with hyaluronic acid and niacinamide so it’s really replenishing and nourishing on the skin. With these four steps, you’ll have the easiest morning and night routine.”

Fenty Skin will be available at Sephora Malaysia and in stores starting 26th December 2020.
