I went from rarely wearing makeup to recreating these looks from Blackpink’s trendy music video.
From dominating the charts in South Korea to being worldwide sensations, the members of Blackpink have changed the game for girl groups and have become inspiration to many, including myself! Aside from their distinct discography, they are praised for their intricate looks and styles too. Recently, fans have taken interest in recreating their striking makeup looks from their latest music video ‘How You Like That’, which garnered a whopping 458 million views within 2 months.
After reading an article featuring the group’s makeup artist, Lee Myeong-Seon, better known as Maeng in Allure Korea, I decided to try out some of their easier makeup looks myself. Here’s a brief breakdown of them.
Micro dots
This looked pretty simple to recreate. It was reported that Jisoo had creatively suggested to do dots all over her eyelids to complement the already vibrant and colourful music video. The dots were drawn using a black eyeliner pencil, then darkened with liquid liner by Maeng. In the music video itself, black diamantés were applied on top for them to be more visible on camera. Easy-peasy!
Hot pink puckers
While the modern hanbok scene was spectacular, the complementing makeup is what caught my eye. Aside from matching Lisa’s eyeshadow to her bubblegum pink wig, Maeng also applied an electric pink lip shade to amplify her bold look. This harmonised with their strong music video concept. After trying out this colour for the first time, I definitely felt much more confident that I ever did before!
Crystal blue
As for Jennie in the dreamy snow setting, Maeng created spots of electric blue eyeshadow at the inner corners of her eyes. But because they were not prominent under the lights, Maeng further added blue studs to emphasise it even more. This was then complemented by a subtle, straight winged eyeliner flick. This easily became one of my favourite looks and will be my go-to for the next music festival I attend when Covid-19 blows over.
